<image:title>Blog - Navigating the discomfort of positive change: what are the new patterns and how can we welcome them in? - Before fluency things can feel clunky, uncomfortable and difficult. And so it is the case with change, even positive, intentional change that we want.</image:title>
<image:caption>The image that comes to mind is like a full renovation of your house. You adjust to the process of renovation, using only certain bits of the house, and then even when complete you are getting used to the new house, so much so you may find yourself looking for something in the place it used to be, a slip back into the old patterns.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What if leading is really about giving us the things to be more of us? - Carl Rogers compared humans to potatoes (far more eloquently than this…). Essentially, although it wont produce more potatoes, if you put a potato in a dark space it still roots, it still tries to grow.</image:title>
<image:caption>Rogers’ key point was that like potatoes we are organisms who, regardless of the conditions, are doing our best to grow, to fulfil our positive potential.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What if we focused on just showing up? - It would have been much more different to notice the difficulty I felt when considering showing up to rugby again: the expectations I feared I would never live up to, the fear of what that would show about me, the fear of all the work I’d have to do to be any good again.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - When we want more of something in our lives, sometimes the simplest way is all we need to get going? - For example, I want to read more. With that aspiration my mind instantly jumps to the conclusion that I need to find at least an hour a day to read enough to make a difference. And so I begin trying to contort my time to enforce this hour of daily reading, most likely at the expense, or at least the diminishment, of something else I want and need to make reading happen. What are the other implicit expectations of this want to read?</image:title>
<image:caption>That reading must be books and my success will be in books read, which in turn fuels the assumption that I need significant time, every day, to fulfil this want. The simpler reality is that I want to read more things, things that I am curious about or that interest me. Those things could be books, they could also be articles or blog posts or newsletters or reviews or recipes or blurbs.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Our ideas are seeds, it is up to us to cultivate them. - Now anyone who has ever tended to a plant will know that the above is never plain sailing. In fact we can’t control all the conditions that may allow the plant to grow, the seed may never even germinate. In the same way the success of an idea is as much a product of the time and place as it is what we give to it.</image:title>
<image:caption>So, now we know we have all these seeds, some more promising than others, how would you approach them?</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What can my Year 7 art lesson teach me about finding perspective to focus on what matters on a daily basis? - When I think of perspective I think of the school art homework where we had to draw a room in perspective. The perspective was created by a vanishing point with the contents of the room, from the walls to the windows to the furniture, sitting on parallel lines originating from this vanishing point. We all got our first attempts very wrong, so out of perspective that we ended up re-doing the same lesson the following week.</image:title>
<image:caption>It isn’t just in drawing that perspective can be difficult. When you get it everything fits, there can be clarity, direction and a sense of peace. When things are out of perspective there can be imbalance. We can experience tunnel vision and what matters can be lost or distorted compared to what feels urgent and critical.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What can movie quicksand tell us about getting unstuck? - The challenge when we’re stuck, like quicksand, is to double down, to sink deeper into the problem, desperate for an answer. External and internal pressures produce tunnel vision and collude to limit our ability to find the answer we’re looking for.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - A wonderful life isn’t just from things going our way - George’s situation isn’t from any lack of planning or dedication. He spends four years working to save up money to travel and go to college when his father has a stroke. Later, on his wedding day, his world trip honeymoon is ruined by the Great Depression that forces him to stay put to ensure the survival of his father’s, and now his, building and loans company. Instead of flying to Europe George spends the day giving the money for his honeymoon to customers to ensure they can make it through. In fact, George ends up never leaving Bedford Falls dedicating his life to supporting the local people to become homeowners and move out of the slums run by the miserly town tycoon, Henry Potter. Eventually, George’s luck runs out, with his uncle and business partner misplacing $8,000 on the day a bank examiner is at their offices, he faces bankruptcy and prison. That same day George’s brother, Harry, is returning to Bedford Falls having become a town hero and awarded the Medal of Honour in the recent war. George was unable to fight in the war after becoming deaf in one ear from an infection caught as a child when he saved that same brother from drowning in a frozen lake. In short, George, on the cusp of losing everything, resents all the sacrifices he has made that have left his dreams unfulfilled.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - How we can reframe our expectations to better equip ourselves to achieve what we want? Or, what has Barack Obama got to do with achieving what we want in life? - The pandemic is an obvious example when so much we were working towards had to change as we adapted to lockdowns. However, it happens more often than expected, a difficult day at work may mean we lose the motivation to go to the gym or work on that personal project we had planned to dedicate an evening to.</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s like being on a boat at sea and trying to build additions to the boat as you work to keep afloat in the face of the wind and waves. You may be trying to build a mast and sail to help you go further and faster but unanticipated storms mean you really need to repair some leaks or simply hunker down and let the storm pass. This all sounds rather pessimistic. Being particularly glum you could read the above and ask: ‘what’s the point in trying if I’m probably going to spend 90% of my time and efforts simply having to keep afloat in the face of things outside of my control?’</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Reframing routine to get us to where we want to be - Stopping to answer why I chose to create a routine of meditation, I, ironically, notice that it was to help me be more present each day, to take time to pause and to create space for me, because those three things are crucial to me being my best. Here we see how, without an awareness of the intention behind a routine, we can be controlled by a routine that was created to positively support us.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Reframing routine to get us to where we want to be - To do so it can be helpful to reframe routines as tools to help us adapt to the constantly changing world and to meet our own changing needs. In this landscape of change and evolution, routines become the product of trial and error. In this context having a fixed routine actually seems a bit illogical. What about the fact routines are a means of control in a constantly changing world? Well, in this reframing routines perform the same function, they help us navigate this change and continue to pursue a life that serves our needs and fulfils our vision for life. The more we can approach our routines with an open mindedness the more they will naturally adapt to best serve us.</image:title>
<image:caption>With a reframed approach to routines, their use and how they serve us we can begin to reassess and create routines that best serve us now.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - If not now when? The challenge of taking responsibility for our lives in each moment. - What does it feel like to consider ourselves as responsible for us? To really know it? Liberating perhaps, but also quite possibly daunting, scary or overwhelming. To draw on the famous Spiderman quote: ‘with great power, comes great responsibility.’</image:title>
<image:caption>It is easy to forget our responsibility, as it is our power. Life is one of possibilities and potential, what becomes of life is down to us, how we respond to life and the responsibility we take in how we choose to respond to the possibilities we are presented with. With the awareness of our responsibility, comes the choice of whether to be responsible or not, whether we choose to answer to life.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - If not now when? The challenge of taking responsibility for our lives in each moment. - By pursuing what matters to us, what feels meaningful we can tap into our worth and take responsibility for us. Here the idea of in what way can we live our sense of purpose or meaning today can be helpful. Think back to the swimmer who simply focused on winning every race, he had his daily purpose. If we return to the writing example, if we were to cultivate a daily writing practice again we are taking responsibility.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Once upon a time I was worthy. How to empower ourselves through the stories we tell ourselves. - Stories often overlay facts with layers of our interpretation, beliefs, and influences from our environment. Yet we hold the story as if it is true rather than being one way of seeing something.</image:title>
<image:caption>To be able to reframe our stories is to first recognise that we are not our stories, in fact we are the creators of these stories. Yes, these stories are shaped by how we see the world which doesn’t just come from us but from our friends, family, community and many more external influences, however, it is still us who can choose how to piece all these ideas and elements together.</image:caption>

Instead to protect us from these fears we can disconnect from what we really want and we miss out on what else life has to offer and on exploring our full potential.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The power of proactivity: small, conscious steps to create big changes - Another eye-opening example Chambliss uses is Mary Meagher, who, aged 13 and having qualified for the National Championships, decided to break the 200m butterfly world record. The two things she noted as crucial in her going on to break that record in 1979 at the age of 14 were ensuring she was on-time to every practice and that her turns between laps were technically and legally correct in every training session. What is striking is that neither of these actions are ground breaking or novel, Meagher didn’t uncover a new approach that was what made her a world-record holder, instead it was two conscious decisions to do things differently.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Pursuing purpose: How to uncover what we really want (and navigate all the doubts and uncertainty that come with it) - A good model to use is John Whitmore’s goal pyramid from his book Coaching for Performance. In it Whitmore takes a triangle and breaks it into sections. The top section, the pinnacle of the pyramid, is the ‘Dream goal’, our ‘Big Why’, our ultimate vision, below this is the ‘Big What’ or the ‘End Goal’ which is the tangible manifestation of our ‘Dream goal’, what we hope to achieve. Underneath the Dream goal and End goal are ‘Performance goals’, the milestones on our way to our ‘End goal’ and ‘Process goals’ the individual steps we can take and are 100% able to control.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - What is fulfilling our potential and where do we start? - In some ways being our best is so difficult because it is so effortless. This is where interference often arises and where simply focusing on being our best in any given moment can help us to let go of all the things we hold on to that get in the way of being our best. Headspace, the meditation app, often refers to the blue sky behind the clouds and it feels like an apt image here. Our best is the blue sky that is always there, just sometimes hiding behind the clouds.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Overcoming our own expectations and focus on outcomes to simply be our best - In fact I can do even more. I can refine this process. I can consider what worked well from the first two weeks, what could I do differently, what else I would like to try or change.</image:title>
<image:caption>When we think of the process we give ourselves ultimate control, the choice of what we want to do, how we want to approach it, if we even want what we thought we did. By placing our focus here, on the process, and by letting go of expectations and outcomes, which we cannot control, we give ourselves the freedom to give our best to the process and in doing so to be our best.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - When not having a go is the greatest risk to fulfilling our potential - Sometimes, a life where we knew exactly how everything would pan out, where we know that by doing x we will produce y sounds wonderful, relieving-ly straight forward and comfortable. However, contemplating such a life also sounds potentially monotonous and lacking. Think back to the last time you did something unplanned that brought you joy? Imagine a life without that ever again. This doesn’t mean we should be vulnerable every moment of every day trying new and uncertain things. For our own wellbeing a balance between the vulnerability of trying new things and with following existing patterns is important.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Tackling self-limiting beliefs (originally: I can’t write a good title for this blog post…I can’t do this…) - Self-limiting beliefs are a defence mechanism. Fears of not belonging by risking being wrong, by standing out, by acting without certainty of the outcome – fears of being vulnerable – are incredibly self-limiting but also have a purpose. We all have them. They keep us safe from judgements, keep us in our comfort zone, help us avoid vulnerability and maintain our perceived sense of belonging and connection with others.</image:title>
<image:caption>However, these self-limiting beliefs also stop us being us. They stop us sharing ideas we believe in and are passionate about, they stop us learning, and ultimately, they stop us living fully.</image:caption>

<image:title>Coaching - Coaching is founded on the belief that we each have our own answers. Through reflective listening, asking powerful questions, and creating the space and time a coach helps the coachee, or client, to discover these answers, often by setting goals and actions to help you get to where you want to be. As a coach, I will not advise or offer answers but aim to help you develop an awareness of what you want and with that clarity the motivation and direction to get there. In short, coaching is a process of exploring, growing, and being who we want to be.</image:title>

<image:title>About me - In hindsight I wish I’d had a coach. Initially all I wanted to do was play rugby. What got in the way, besides injuries, was mindset, a disconnect between realising and articulating I wanted something, believing and committing to achieving that aspiration, and creating a plan to bring it to being. These are all things that coaching would have helped me work on, even during injury. I was fortunate to have found coaching as a volunteer and to run an education charity that uses coaching as part of a year-long programmes to help young people fulfil their potential in education. My own experience means I am passionate about empowering people to discover what they want and to coach them towards that vision – to be their true potential.</image:title>
